Publication
Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future is accompanied by an illustrated
catalog that addresses the same themes and follows the same framework as
the exhibition, with sections devoted to building types and the
architect’s milieu.
The publication comprises approximately 65,000 words of text and 450
illustrations, of which approximately a quarter is in color. An opening
essay written by co-editors Donald Albrecht and Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen
introduces the themes of the book, which is composed of two main sections,
an annotated chronology, selected Saarinen writings, and appreciations
by former collaborators. In the first section, titled Reframing Saarinen,
seven interpretive essays by a team of researchers and scholars situate
Saarinen and his work in his social, intellectual, and artistic milieu.
The second section of the book offers the most complete portfolio of
Saarinen projects to date presenting a chronological survey of more than
one hundred projects. In addition, the portfolio features eleven short
essays that discuss individual projects and building types. A detailed
narrative chronology of the life and career of Saarinen draws on a multitude
of sources, from interviews to private datebooks and letters, tracing
diverse personal and professional aspects of the architect’s life.
Finally, there is a selection of writings by Eero Saarinen, as well as a
transcript of a panel discussion with former colleagues Cesar Pelli, Kevin
Roche, Harold Roth, and Robert Venturi, moderated by Robert A. M. Stern.
The catalog is published by Yale University Press.
